Our Name
Why Weltner?
Philip Weltner Sr Inspired us to fight for justice and expose corruption in society. In 1912, Dr. Philip Weltner wielded his pickaxe as he posed as a prisoner in Campbell County, now Fulton County, when he was actually a deputy solicitor general.
Weltner sought to expose the mistreatment of prisoners by prison officials. Dr. Philip Weltner became president of Oglethorpe University in 1943 and revamped the core curriculum program ultimately saving the university from financial ruin.
The Philip Weltner Library, Lowry Hall at Oglethorpe University has been named in his honor.
